Abstract

1999-11-01 to 2000-04-30
The investigation of seismological signals generated by volcanos, gives insight into its interior processes, which can not be obtained with other methods. With the availability of portable broadband sensors, the frequency range of the observed signals has been improved drastically over the last years. The GeoForschungZentrum Potsdam in cooperation with UNAM (Universidad National Autonoma Mexico) just starts the deployment of 21 broadband instruments around the Popocatepetl . This active volcano with a hight of 5465 m is situated about 60 km southeast of Mexico City. Within the area, potentially affectet by a big eruption, live about 25 Mio. people. The aim of the project is to investigate correlations between longperiodic tremor signals and observed eruptions, as found for example at Kilauea volcano, Hawaii. Due to the long deployment of the instruments, which will be about 6 months, it also will be possible to map the deeper structures of the Popocatepetl by means of converted teleseimic waves.
