Abstract

2008-06-01 to 2010-06-30
We are going to conduct a seismic experiment in the Pamir and Tien Shan collision zone, central Asia, to study its deep seismic structure and to infer geodynamic processes and evolution history associated with it. The seismic array will consist of 40 broadband stations located in Kyrgistan and Tajikistan. The profile is ca. 300 to 400 km long with an average station distance of 10-15 km. Duration of the experiment: 1-1.5 years. The proposed scientific work mainly includes following objectives: 1) Teleseismic P and S receiver functions - discontinuities in the crust and upper mantle, 2) Teleseismic tomography - anomalies of seismic velocities in the upper mantle, 3) Shear wave splitting - seismic anisotropy in the crust & mantle, 4) Accurate earthquake location - local seismicity.
